The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has partnered with Reliance Jio to launch a telecom-driven safety alert system to improve commuter safety and enhance the travel experience on National Highways. With this initiative, travelers will receive immediate notifications via mobile networks as they approach hazardous zones, such as accident-prone areas, locations with stray cattle, fog-prone sections, and temporary traffic detours. Utilizing Jio’s comprehensive 4G and 5G network, alerts will be sent via SMS, WhatsApp messages, and prioritized automated calls. The system is designed to work effortlessly for all Jio users traveling on or near National Highways, providing early warning alerts without requiring additional hardware installation. It will be progressively integrated with NHAI’s existing digital platforms, including the ‘Rajmargyatra’ mobile app and the 1033 emergency helpline, forming a cohesive digital safety network.
With more than 500 million subscribers, Jio’s extensive network coverage will be vital to expanding the system nationwide. NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav pointed out that this initiative will set a new standard for technology-driven road safety by equipping commuters with timely information that helps them make safer driving choices. Jio President Mr. Jyotindra Thacker also highlighted the telecom networks' ability to provide large-scale alerts, helping reduce road incidents. The initial phase will focus on identifying risk zones and setting real-time alert thresholds in selected NHAI regional offices while fully complying with regulatory and data protection standards. NHAI also aims to partner with more telecom operators to extend system coverage. This strategic initiative reflects NHAI’s dedication to adopting innovative, scalable solutions to enhance safety, intelligence, and efficiency in highway travel across India.
