Nine Years of GST: Simplifying Taxation, Strengthening India

Since its launch in 2017, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) has fundamentally reshaped India’s indirect taxation system by replacing multiple Central and State taxes with a single, integrated framework. The reform has eliminated multiple layers of taxation, improved transparency and enabled the seamless movement of goods and services across states, helping create a unified national market under the vision of “One Nation, One Tax.” Over the past nine years, GST has evolved through continuous policy refinements, technology-driven administration and stronger Centre-State coordination under the GST Council. The introduction of digital platforms for registration, return filing, tax payments and e-invoicing has simplified compliance, enhanced efficiency and strengthened the overall ease of doing business. These measures have also improved tax administration, increased transparency and broadened the tax base while supporting formalisation of the economy.

The Next-Generation GST reforms introduced in 2025 have further streamlined the tax structure through rationalised tax rates, wider exemptions and simplified compliance processes, making the system more taxpayer-friendly. The reforms are designed to reduce the compliance burden on businesses, particularly MSMEs, while delivering benefits to households, farmers and consumers. GST has also strengthened cooperative federalism by fostering consensus-based decision-making between the Centre and States through the GST Council, ensuring a balanced and responsive tax framework. As India advances towards becoming a developed economy, GST continues to serve as a key driver of economic reforms by promoting a competitive business environment, encouraging investment, improving revenue efficiency and supporting sustainable, inclusive and technology-enabled growth across sectors.
