The NITI Aayog recently released the Export Preparedness Index (EPI) 2024, a comprehensive assessment tool that benchmarks Indian states and Union Territories on their preparedness to drive and sustain export growth. The Index considers performance across a variety of weighted pillars, including export policies, business environment, quality of infrastructure, and export outcomes, providing a complete framework to measure subnational export performance. The latest edition saw Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat as the top three large states, while Uttarakhand emerged as the leading smaller state, followed by Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland, Dadra & Nagar Haveli & Daman & Diu, Goa, and Tripura. Together, these rankings reflect not only established export hubs but also rising participation from less-traditional regions, signalling expanding export capacity across the country.

NITI Aayog emphasizes that the EPI is an important policy tool to advance cooperative and competitive federalism by incentivizing states to undertake focused reforms and develop resilient export ecosystems. While releasing the report, NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Mr. B. V. R. Subrahmanyam pointed out that as India widens its network of Free Trade and Economic Partnership Agreements, strong domestic export foundations will assume increasing importance in accessing world market opportunities. The data-driven insights from this index facilitate the identification of structural gaps and best practices, thereby allowing states to orient their export strategies toward national trade aspirations and global value chains. Exports are an essential driver of economic resilience and competitiveness, and the EPI will continue to play a significant role in guiding the states toward steady export growth and attainment of worldwide market shares.
