There is no shortage of coal in the country. The majority of the country’s coal needs are supplied by domestic production and supply. The production of coal pan-India increased by around 14.7%, from 778.21 million tonnes (MT) in 2021-22 to 893.19 MT in 2022-23. As compared to 2013-14, coal production in 2022-23 increased by 58%.
Domestic coal production jumped by more than 8.51% from January-June 2023 over the same period the previous year.
The total consumption demand (including both domestic coal supply and imports) in 2022-23 stood at 1,115.02 MT and 1,027.83 MT in 2021-22.
The steps taken by the coal companies to promote green mining include the implementation of modern technology to reduce the impact of pollution, an extensive tree plantation programme, the creation of eco-parks to conserve biodiversity, maximum utilisation of mine water, the introduction of first-mile connectivity projects, and installation of sand segregation plants, among others.
