NTPC Group is advancing its clean energy ambitions with a robust pipeline of pumped storage projects (PSPs) totalling 20 Gigawatt (GW) across multiple sites in India, according to a senior company official. These projects, which are being developed by NTPC Ltd and its hydro subsidiaries, are positioned to play a crucial role in India's renewable energy transition by offering reliable long-duration energy storage. The Group aims to commission between 3 GW and 5 GW of PSPs by FY32. Notably, the first major PSP under this initiative—a 1,000-megawatt (MW) (4 x 250 MW) project at Tehri in Uttarakhand, has already begun commercial supply through its first unit earlier this month. The full commissioning is expected in FY26.

PSP assets offer more than 40 years of operational life and deliver regulated returns. They are critical infrastructure that brings long-term stability to our energy portfolio, ensuring sustainable growth while strengthening India’s energy security and climate commitments,” the official said. The company has completed preliminary feasibility reports for 18 PSPs, while detailed project reports (DPRs) for four projects are in the advanced stages of preparation, signalling a steady expansion in its energy storage portfolio. NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power utility, currently meets about one-fourth of the country’s power demand through a diverse energy mix that includes thermal, solar, and wind sources. As of June 13, 2025, NTPC’s standalone and group commercial generation capacities stood at 60,266 MW and 81,368 MW, respectively.
