The Odisha government is broadening its tourism strategy to position the state as a prime destination for weddings and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions) tourism, in addition to its focus on temple tourism and Buddhist circuits. Odisha boasts many attractions, including its extensive coastline, historic temples, diverse wildlife, ecotourism sites, waterfalls, mountains, lakes, and dams, which draw domestic visitors annually. The state aims to rival established destinations like Rajasthan, Goa, and Kerala by becoming a key hub for high-profile weddings and business events. Popular beach towns such as Puri, Konark, and Gopalpur are set to be promoted as venues for these events, with luxury hotels capable of hosting them year-round.

In addition to these coastal areas, Odisha's tourism department has developed eco-retreats at locations such as Konark, Satkosia, Bhitarkanika, Daringbadi, Hirakud, Sonapur, and Putsil, which are ideal for destination weddings and MICE activities. These retreats offer luxury tents, cottages, large halls, and guest facilities. Visitors can enjoy various activities, including water sports, wildlife tours, beach sports, and cultural performances showcasing the state’s heritage. To enhance the experience, the government is also encouraging private hotels and Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) hotels to host these events. While industry leaders, such as the chairman of the Hotel and Restaurants Association of Odisha (HRAO), Mr. J K Mohanty, support the initiative, they stress the need for further infrastructure development, including five-star hotels, improved connectivity, and recreational facilities to meet the demands of high-profile tourism.
