Ride hailing platform Ola plans to set up a new technology centre in Pune and recruit over the next few years about 1,000 engineers, sources said.
The tech centre in Pune will be the second such centre for the company in India after Bengaluru, according to sources close to the growth, and will cater to global and local solutions for all of Ola 's companies across the group.
An Ola spokesperson confirmed the development when contacted but declined to give more information.
One of the development experts said that the Pune facility, which will be operational by the end of this quarter, will help create jobs for 1,000 trained technology professionals over the next three years.
Ola opened an Advanced Technology Centre in San Francisco Bay in June last year to speed up its work on electric and connected vehicles.
Pune is well-known for its IT infrastructure and tech expertise, making it a favourite destination for many tech-led businesses like Ola.
With about 1,500 of them in engineering roles, Ola has over 4,000 employees.
Ola 's competitor, Uber, has recently announced that its engineering team in India will be improved. As senior management, he has roped in Amazon veteran Mr. Manikandan Thangarathnam to lead all rider and platform engineering teams in Bengaluru.
In addition, in addition to its previous announcement of adding 140 engineers to the region, the US-based company also plans to recruit 85 more engineers in India.
Uber said its overall vision is to improve its technical capabilities, as it places India as a technology centre for the world to develop and innovate.
These hirings come just months after both Ola and Uber reported job cuts after the COVID-19 pandemic affected their companies.
In May, Uber announced that it had laid off about 600 employees in India, about a quarter of the country's workforce, while Ola had laid off 1,400 employees from its travel, financial services and food businesses.
Businesses are now returning to normalcy with the gradual unlocking of cities and enterprises (following almost two months of lockdown).
A variety of initiatives have been confirmed by the two ride hailing firms-including daily vehicle sanitation and mandatory wearing of masks by driver partners and driver partners.
