Union Minister of Labour & Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports, Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, announced that nearly a million gig workers have been registered on the e-Shram portal. The registration process is ongoing and in line with the Budget announcement. He stated that the government will likely register 3-4 million more gig workers in the next three months. Registration on the social security portal makes workers eligible to claim healthcare benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). They will also have access to other social security schemes mapped on the portal, including the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan Yojana (PM-SYM), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), and Atal Pension Yojana (APY).

He also informed that the Centre has written to states and Union Territories to take urgent steps to safeguard workers from extreme heatwave conditions. The measures include rescheduling working hours to avoid peak heat times, ensuring access to adequate drinking water, providing shaded rest areas and ventilation or cooling at worksites, arranging regular health check-ups, and supplying emergency ice packs and heat illness prevention materials.
