The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) has approved over 1.44 lakh food processing projects under its various schemes to boost rural economies and reduce post-harvest losses. Through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY), 1,134 projects, including 41 Mega Food Parks and 395 Cold Chain projects, have been approved as of June 30, 2025. Additionally, 1.44 lakh proposals have been sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme and 170 under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI). These schemes support the development of infrastructure such as temperature-controlled transport, cold storage, and value-added processing units, thereby enhancing the shelf life and market value of farm produce.
Kushinagar district in Uttar Pradesh has been identified as a Banana Cluster under the Operation Greens component of PMKSY and as a One District One Product (ODOP) region for bananas under PMFME. A total of 261 projects have been approved in the district under PMFME. Financial assistance in the form of grants-in-aid is being provided to create infrastructure that improves supply chains, fosters entrepreneurship, generates rural employment, and supports Indian brands globally. PLISFPI, with an outlay of Rs. 10,900 crore (US$ 1.25 billion), is being implemented from 2021-22 to 2026-27 to create global food manufacturing champions. To boost investment and sourcing, MoFPI has organised three editions of World Food India in 2017, 2023, and 2024, bringing together global stakeholders to integrate Indian food processing into international markets.
