Indian Government officials have provided details of their successful effort to strengthen the nation's Digital Infrastructure, as evidenced by the over 500,000 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) installed throughout the Country by local telephone companies. Minister of Communications, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, that the rapid expansion of 5G in India demonstrates the Indian Government's commitment to improving Mobile Connectivity through the provision of Digital Services and also the enabling of Next-generation Technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cloud Applications. He added that there are many new developments in improving connectivity in rural areas through the BharatNet Project (India's flagship Digital Broadband Program).
The objective is to provide citizens in difficult-to-reach locations with equal and equitable access to both telecommunications and broadband capabilities. The measures being taken include expanding BharatNet broadband infrastructure to Gram Panchayats, border hamlets, and underserved areas to promote Digital Inclusion, enable access to Government Services, and facilitate Digital Payments, while contributing to socio-economic advancement. In conjunction with the rollout of 5G, the expansion of broadband telecommunications infrastructure into rural areas supports India's broader initiatives related to Digital Empowerment of Society and its commitment to promoting Digital Inclusion. By providing high-speed broadband connections, the Government intends to open new opportunities in Education, Health Care, Agriculture, E-Governance, and Entrepreneurship, while enhancing India's Digital Ecosystem and supporting the Growth of Towns and Villages throughout the Country.
