Over 8.5 million paid positions were added between September-October 2022, bringing the overall number of salaried workers in the country to 85-86 million, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. This is greater than pre-pandemic levels and follows a 32-month period in which the pandemic-induced lockdown reduced the number of paid employees to 65 million by August 2020, according to the report.

Even the percentage of paid positions has returned to pre-pandemic levels, reaching 21.4% in October after falling to 17% during the pandemic. Salaried jobs were greater in September and October than in any previous month since the pandemic.

This was fuelled by a rise in urban salaried positions for the second month in a row in October 2022. While 2.14 million urban paid employment was added in September 2022, another 2.26 million were added in October, for a total rise of 4.4 million in the previous two months.
