On the eve of World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, NASSCOM released the eighth edition of its annual report titled ‘Patent Pulse 2025 – Decoding India’s Ascent in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Patent Landscape’. The report highlights India's growing presence in the global patent landscape, maintaining its position as the fifth-largest filer of patents. India’s patent-to-gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio has increased 2.6 times, from 144 in 2013 to 381 in 2023. In FY24, the country saw over 90,000 patents filed, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth. More than 1,00,000 patents were granted, representing a threefold increase from the previous year. Indian resident filers contributed over 55% of the total filings in FY24, up from 52.3% in FY23. This expansion was crucial for educational institutions and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Between 2010 and 2025, over 86,000 AI-related patents were filed in India, representing more than 25% of all technology patents in the country. The number of AI patents filed from 2021 to 2025 was seven times higher than the filings between 2010 and 2015. Of these, 63% originated in India, while 17% were filed in the United States. Machine Learning (ML) remains the dominant technique in AI patents, making up over 55% of the filings. Generative AI (GenAI) is emerging as a key innovation driver, accounting for 50% of all ML-related patents. Despite its global representation of just 6%, GenAI constitutes 28% of India’s AI patents, positioning India among the top five countries globally in this domain. However, India faces challenges with a low AI patent grant ratio of 0.37%, significantly lower than China and the United States (US), and educational institutions have a low filing-to-grant ratio of just 1%.
