Overall mineral production increased by 6.4% in May 2023

The mining and quarrying sector's index of mineral production for May 2023 (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 128.1, which is 6.4% higher than the level in May 2022. According to the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) preliminary data, there was a cumulative growth of 5.8%% during April-May 2022-23, as compared to the same time last year.

 The following important minerals were produced in May 2023- coal (762 lakh tonnes), lignite (35 lakh tonnes), crude (25 lakh tonnes), iron ore (253 lakh tonnes), limestone (387 lakh tonnes), natural gas (utilised) (2,838 cubic metres), bauxite (2,386,000 tonnes), chromite (372,000 tonnes), copper concentrate (9,000 tonnes), lead concentrate (33,000 tonnes), manganese ore (329,000 tonnes), zinc concentrate (133,000 tonnes), phosphorite (140,000 tonnes), magnesite (11,000 tonnes), and gold (97 kg).

The minerals which showed positive growth In May 2023 were Manganese ore (40.4%), magnesite (28.2%), copper concentrate (24.4%), chromite (16.3%), iron ore (13.6%), limestone (10.1%), lead concentrate (9.7%), coal (7%), bauxite (4.8%), and zinc concentrate (2.9%).
