Passenger Vehicle Sales Rise 36.5% in August, Two-Wheelers Up 10.5%: SIAM

India produced over 31.57 lakh vehicles in August 2026, with domestic passenger vehicle sales rising 36.5% year-on-year to 4,39,309 units, up from 3,21,901 units in August 2025, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Two-wheeler sales grew 10.5% to 20,34,698 units, while three-wheeler sales rose 22.8% to 93,764 units, with passenger carrier sales up 22.4% to 78,680 units and goods carrier sales rising 34.9% to 13,320 units. However, e-rickshaw sales declined 6% to 1,264 units, while e-cart sales fell 38.3% to 500 units. Within two-wheelers, scooter sales jumped 23.8% to 8,55,715 units, while motorcycle sales rose 2.4% to 11,33,047 units.
Mr. Rajesh Menon, Director General, SIAM, said passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers recorded their highest-ever August sales in 2026, with passenger vehicles posting double-digit growth of 36.5%, three-wheelers growing 22.8%, and two-wheelers logging 10.5% growth compared to August 2025. Mr. Rajesh Menon said the automobile industry was going through a robust growth phase, though he cautioned that August's growth was supported by a lower base in the previous year, adding that strong consumer confidence, resilient rural markets, improving financing conditions and accelerating adoption of alternative drivetrains were creating a favourable ecosystem across vehicle categories, with festive demand expected to provide an additional boost for healthy Q2 numbers.
