With a vision of providing quality medicines at an affordable rate to the general public, the government has set a target of increasing the number of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJKs) or outlets for dispensing generic medicines to 10,000 by March 2024. The number of stores has grown to 8,735 as of May 31, 2022. PMBJKs cover 739 districts across the country.

Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency of PMBJP is committed to ensure the continuous availability of essential medicines at the stores. In the last eight years of its journey, starting with an annual turnover of Rs. 8 crore (US$ 1.03 million) in FY 2014-15, PMBI has clocked its highest monthly sales turnover of Rs. 100 crore (US$ 12.88 million) in May 2022, saving the country approximately Rs. 600 crore (US$ 77.25 million).

Under PMBJK, new applications have also been invited to cover 3579 blocks of 406 districts to provide quality generic medicines to every citizen of the country through Jan Aushadhi Kendras. The scheme offers a Rs. 5 lakh (US$ 6,437.54) incentive, as well as special incentives of up to Rs. 2 lakh (US$ 2,575.02) for various categories such as women, SC/ST, hill districts, island districts, and north-eastern states.

As a result, PMBI has strengthened its supply chain system by establishing four warehouses in Gurugram, Chennai, Guwahati, and Surat. Furthermore, a strong distributor network of 39 distributors across India ensures timely supplies to all parts of the country.
