PM addresses World Bank Event - ‘Making it Personal: How Behavioral Change Can Tackle Climate Change’

At a World Bank climate change event, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi said “Tackling climate change is not only the responsibility of the government but also of every individual.” In his remarks at the event titled ‘Making it Personal: How Behavioural Change Can Tackle Climate Change’, Mr. Modi emphasised the significance of small actions, saying “We believe that individuals making the right decisions for our planet are key in the battle for our planet.

Prime Minister said that in 2015, at the United Nations General Assembly, he spoke about the need for behavioural change, and in October 2022, the UN General Secretary and he started the “Mission LiFE”. According to him, the preamble to the COP 27 conclusion document also mentions sustainable lifestyle and consumption.

While illustrating the mass movements in the country, he further mentioned several movements that had occurred in recent years, resulting in improved sex ratios, massive cleanliness drives, adoption of LED bulbs, which helps in avoiding nearly 39 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year and saving water by covering nearly 700,000 hectares of farmland with micro-irrigation.

Additionally, he informed that the government's efforts under 'Mission LiFE' are extended throughout various areas, such as making local bodies environmentally friendly, saving water, saving energy, decreasing waste and e-waste, adopting healthy lifestyles, natural farming, and promoting millets.

He claimed that these initiatives will save over 22 billion units of energy, nine trillion litres of water, 375 million tonnes of garbage, about one million tonnes of e-waste, and create around 170 million dollars in extra cost savings by 2030.

The prime minister also emphasised the crucial role that international organisations play in motivating nations all across the world.
