PM calls for rapid rollout of 5G, says will contribute $450 bn to economy

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi called on the government and industry to work together to accelerate the rollout of 5G services, which could add US$ 450 billion to the Indian economy over the next 15 years.

He said that 5G would bring positive change in governance, ease of living and ease of doing business. Agriculture, health, education, infrastructure, and logistics will all see increased growth as a result of this.

He also stated that the country should be ready to introduce 6G service by the end of the decade, and that a task group had been established to oversee its implementation. Mr. Modi was speaking at an event commemorating the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's 25th anniversary.

He went on to say that before 2014, just 100 local panchayats in India had access to optical fiber. As of today, the government has connected around 175,000 gram panchayats to broadband.

Mr. Modi previously showcased 5G test beds constructed by eight institutes, led by IIT Madras. The test beds, which were developed with a budget of Rs. 224 crore (US$ 28.82 million) would allow enterprises to test and validate their products, services, and use cases.
