PM e-bus seva: India's cabinet allows governments to spend Rs. 57,613 crore (US$ 6.92 billion) for 10,000 new e-buses

Mr. Anurag Thakur, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting, announced at a briefing on August 16, 2023, that the PM e-Bus Seva Scheme had been authorised by the Cabinet, which is presided over by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The Digital India programme was also given an extension, with an outlay of Rs.14,903 crore, by the Cabinet.

The e-bus scheme has received a total budget allocation of Rs. 57,613 crore (US$ 6.92 billion). The central government would contribute Rs. 20,000 crore (US$ 2.40 billion) towards this, with the state governments covering the remaining amount.

10,000 new electric buses will be introduced in 100 cities with a view towards sustainable mobility and preparing for climate change, according to Mr. Anurag Thakur. A challenge method will be used to choose the cities. The programme will apply to cities with a population of three lakh people or more, with priority given to those without structured bus services.

He further added that procurement and maintenance will be on public-private partnership mode. This scheme will run for a period of run years till 2037.
