PM Surya Ghar: India’s solar revolution

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative, has reached a significant milestone with 10 lakh solar-powered homes as of March 10, 2025. Launched by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, the scheme is rapidly transforming India's energy landscape. With 47.3 lakh applications received, Rs. 4,770 crore (US$ 546.96 million) in subsidies has been disbursed to 6.13 lakh beneficiaries, making solar energy more accessible. The initiative offers collateral-free loans up to Rs. 2 lakh (US$ 2,296.50) at a 6.75% subsidised interest rate through 12 Public Sector Banks, with 3.10 lakh applications received, 1.58 lakh sanctioned, and 1.28 lakh disbursed. A seamless 15-day subsidy transfer process and zero electricity bills for many beneficiaries have accelerated adoption, while each solar installation offsets carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees.

Chandigarh and Daman & Diu have met 100% of their government rooftop solar targets. Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are among the top contributors. The government aims to power one crore homes by FY27. Gujarat leads with 3.51 lakh solar-powered households (18.14%), followed by Maharashtra (1.92 lakh, 22.79%), Uttar Pradesh (75,602, 8.69%), Kerala (65,423, 7.73%), and Rajasthan (26,622, 3.14%). The scheme is expected to save the government Rs. 75,000 crore (US$ 8.60 billion) annually in electricity costs, add 30 GW of solar capacity, generate 1,000 billion units over 25 years, and reduce CO2 emissions by 720 million tonnes. It will also create 17 lakh jobs while promoting domestic manufacturing under Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.
