PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana Delivers Zero Electricity Bills to Over 7.7 Lakh Households

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, through the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana scheme, more than 7,700,000 households around India have become completely free from electricity bills by utilizing rooftop solar power systems. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was introduced by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to help increase the utilization of clean and renewable energy in the household sector; therefore, decreasing the overall electricity costs for families. The program offers financial assistance to households that install rooftop solar panels, therefore making renewable energy a more affordable option for families. Additionally, since more households rely on decentralized systems of solar power generation, it reduces the reliance of many families on old-school forms of electricity generation and provides a way to decrease greenhouse gas emissions, provide greater levels of energy security, and contribute to larger energy independence.
PM Surya Ghar Program is driving many economic, environmental, and other benefits by fostering the development of the domestic solar manufacturing and installation service industry and creating jobs. The ability of households to generate their own electricity is giving everyday consumers an active role in the energy transition taking place in India and relieving some of the pressure from distribution companies. The initiative is consistent with India’s commitment to increasing renewable energy capacity and meeting climate change targets, while supporting equitable economic development. The increased use of solar energy on rooftops will also help strengthen the electric grid and promote efficient energy use in both urban and rural environments. The success of the PM Surya Ghar Program, or free electricity program for low-income homes, demonstrates how policy measures targeted to specific areas can be effective in encouraging clean energy adoption, lowering household energy costs, and supporting the transition of India to an environmentally friendly and self-sufficient electricity system.
