The Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme is rapidly emerging as a catalyst for grassroots entrepreneurship across India. Union Minister Mr. Ravneet Singh informed the Rajya Sabha that the initiative has helped small entrepreneurs, farmers, and women-led units boost their turnover by 1.7 times, showcasing its tangible impact on economic uplift. With a Rs. 10,000-crore (US$ 1.2 billion) outlay, PMFME provides subsidies, technology integration, credit access, and enterprise-level support, enabling micro businesses to expand production, improve market linkages, and scale operations. Nearly 40% of beneficiaries are women-led enterprises, underscoring the scheme’s focus on inclusion and rural empowerment. For instance, an entrepreneur earning Rs. 10 lakh (US$ 12,050) can now reach nearly Rs. 17 lakh (US$ 20,480) in turnover through structured financial support and capacity-building interventions. Complementing this, a Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme of Rs. 10,000 crore (US$ 1.2 billion) is further accelerating growth in India’s food-processing ecosystem. As of October 31, 2025, over Rs. 4,306 crore (US$ 518.7 million) has been allocated to states and Union Territories for seamless on-ground implementation.
Independent evaluations by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries highlight the scheme’s effectiveness in enhancing productivity, scaling operations, and helping entrepreneurs tap new markets, aligning with the vision of “Vocal for Local.” Regular reviews with states, UTs, banks, and SLBCs ensure accountability, timely utilisation of funds, and robust monitoring. By combining financial support, technology, and mentoring, PMFME is not only empowering micro food processors but also nurturing a resilient, competitive, and locally rooted food-processing ecosystem, reflecting India’s commitment to strengthening rural economies and fostering inclusive growth.
