Power availability in rural areas has increased from 12:30 hours in 2014 to 22:30 hours on July 12, 2023, as a result of the central government's "sea of change" in the country's power sector, according to Mr. R.K. Singh, Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy.

The minister also noted that the average national electricity availability in urban areas is 23:30 hours per day.

On July 11-12, 2023, a two-day Review Planning and Monitoring (RPM) meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Union Minister, which included state and power company representatives.

According to the minister, India's power sector has added 185 gigawatt (GW) of capacity, moving the nation from a power deficit to a surplus.

Further, the minister declared that the entire nation has been connected with a single integrated grid capable of transferring 112,000 megawatt (MW) from one part of the nation to another.

The central government has modified the current rules to alter the power tariff system, adopting a "Time of Day"-based power tariff mechanism. The tariff under the proposed Time of Day-based system will be 10-20% lower during the solar hours, which are the first eight hours of the day, and 10-20% higher during peak hours.
