Power consumption grows 12.6 pc in first week of June

As per power ministry data, in the first week of June 2021,Power consumption in India increased by 12.6% to 25.36 billion units (BU), indicating a gradual recovery in industrial and commercial demand. In the first week of June 2020, power consumption stood at 22.53 BU.

According to specialists, the recovery in power consumption and demand was gradual due to the low base of 2020.

In June 2020, power consumption stood at 105.08 BU as compared to 117.98 BU in June 2019, due to less economic activities amidst lockdown restrictions.

 

In the first week of May 2021, the power consumption stood at 26.24 BU.

In the first week of June 2021, peak power demand was recorded or the highest supply in a day registered an increase of > 15% at 168.72 GW (as of June 7, 2021), compared to 146.53 GW on June 6, 2020. On June 4, 2019, peak power demand stood at 181.52.

According to the experts the demand for commercial and industrial power as well as consumption would increase June onwards driven by easing of COVID-19 imposed restrictions.

In April 2021, power consumption registered an increase of 38.5% YoY. In May 2021, the power consumption in India registered an increase of 8.2% YoY at 110.47 billion units (BU) despite a low base in May 2020. Power consumption stood at 102.08 BU in May 2020 and 120.02 BU in May 2019.

In May 2021, the highest supply in a day reached the highest level of 168.78 GW and registered an increase of > 1.5%, as compared to 166.22 GW (peak met) recorded in May 2020. In February 2021, power consumption stood at 103.25 BU compared to 103.81 BU in February 2020 (a leap year).

In March 2021, power consumption increased by ~ 22% to 120.63 BU, compared to 98.95 BU in March 2020. Power consumption registered an increase of 4.6% YoY in September 2020 and 11.6% in October 2020.

In November 2020, the power consumption registered an increase of 3.12%, primarily due to the quick beginning of winters.

In December 2020, it increased by 4.5%, while it increased by 4.4% in January 2021.
