On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi emphasised the need of encouraging indigenous products and self-reliance for prosperity and claimed that doing so will help preserve Indian civilization, art, and culture.

He said the message of "swadeshi" and self-reliance is extremely relevant in the "Azadi ka Amrit Kaal," a reference to the period until 2047, for India to become a developed country. He was speaking via video conference to a group commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Jain saint Mr. Vijay Vallabh Surishwar.

On Wednesday, a commemorative coin and postal stamp were also made available.

When the world is going through a crisis of war, terrorism, and bloodshed and yearning for inspiration to escape this cyclical pattern, ancient traditions and philosophy combined with the might of modern India are turning out to be a great hope, Mr. Modi said in his tribute to the saint. The Jain gurus' teachings and Surishwar's path, he claimed, are the answers to the world's problems.

He said that Mr. Mahatma Gandhi had likewise accepted the "aparigraha" method recommended by Jain gurus.
