Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi Chairs BRICS Session on Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi chaired the BRICS session on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism” during the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12, 2026. The session focused on strengthening multilateral cooperation and ensuring greater representation of the Global South in global decision-making. Prime Minister Mr. Modi highlighted the need for global governance institutions to reflect present-day realities, including greater representation for the Global South in institutions such as the United Nations Security Council. The discussions also emphasised the importance of enabling the Global South to move from being a rule-taker to a rule-shaper. Through BRICS, greater opportunities can be created for young diplomats and policymakers from developing countries to gain negotiation skills, practical training and legal expertise.

The session also highlighted the contribution of seafarers to global trade and the need to provide stronger support to them during times of crisis. A Seafarers Emergency Support Network was proposed as an initiative to address this requirement. The discussions underlined the broader objective of making global governance more inclusive and strengthening partnerships among developing economies. The session concluded with the adoption of the New Delhi BRICS Leaders' Declaration, which sets out shared priorities, commitments and the future direction of BRICS cooperation. The declaration is expected to provide a framework for further collaboration among member countries on issues related to multilateralism, global governance and inclusive development. India's BRICS Chairship continues to focus on strengthening cooperation and ensuring that developing countries have a greater voice and role in shaping global institutions and decision-making processes.
