Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare as the NDA Government completed 12 years in office, highlighting a range of initiatives aimed at improving farm incomes, expanding access to credit and promoting sustainable agriculture. Flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) and the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) programme have strengthened income security and financial inclusion for farmers. Under PM-KISAN, more than Rs. 4.28 lakh crore (US$ 44.93 billion) has been transferred directly to nearly 9.5 crore farmer families, while efforts to improve market access and ensure remunerative prices have been supported through a “Seed to Market” approach and higher Minimum Support Prices (MSPs).

The Government has also focused on modernising agriculture through drone technology, Soil Health Cards, natural farming and irrigation development. Since 2014-15, nearly 26 crore Soil Health Cards have been issued, while crop insurance claims worth around Rs. 1.92 lakh crore (US$ 20.15 billion) have been settled under PMFBY, benefiting nearly 23 crore farmers. Programmes such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, National Livestock Mission and Pradhan Mantri Kisan Maandhan Yojana have further strengthened rural livelihoods and income diversification. Supported by these initiatives, India’s foodgrain production increased from 265 million tonnes in 2013-14 to around 358 million tonnes in 2024-25, while rice production crossed 154 million tonnes, reinforcing the country’s position as the world’s largest rice producer and highlighting the progress achieved in strengthening agricultural resilience, food security and farmer welfare over the past decade.
