Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th edition of the India Mobile Congress (IMC) at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, also marking the distinction of hosting the GSMA Board meeting in India, and said it is encouraging to see India's telecom sector steadily moving towards greater self-reliance. Mr. Narendra Modi recalled launching 5G from the same stage in 2022, noting that 5G networks, now operating from over 5.5 lakh base stations, have reached every district and boosted internet speeds tenfold. He said the mobile phone has emerged as a vital tool of good governance over the past 10-12 years, central to the Digital India vision, which democratised technology after a decade in which modern technology was increasingly becoming a privilege of the few. He noted that over Rs. 50 lakh crore (US$ 526.48 billion) has been transferred directly to beneficiaries via mobile platforms, preventing Rs. 5 lakh crore (US$ 52.65 billion) from leaking into corrupt hands, with the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi alone depositing over Rs. 4 lakh crore (US$ 42.12 billion) directly to small farmers
.
Mr. Narendra Modi said mobile phones have ensured less travel, less waiting, less cost and more convenience, calling it technology's biggest citizen dividend, while highlighting that over 50 crore people are now engaged in the gaming ecosystem and that content creation has grown into a multi-thousand-crore sector. He stressed the importance of fortifying phone and network security, calling for a global framework to tackle deepfakes and cyber fraud. He said India has moved from being a consumer to a creator, with domestic semiconductor manufacturing now live across five locations, and that sweeping reforms such as the Telecommunications Act and the GatiShakti portal are driving the telecom sector's progress towards complete technological sovereignty.
