Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the 594-km-long Ganga Expressway on April 29, 2026, marking a major milestone in India’s infrastructure development. Built at an estimated cost of Rs. 36,230 crore (US$ 3.92 billion), the expressway connects Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh to Prayagraj in the eastern region, significantly enhancing east-west connectivity across the state. As one of the longest access-controlled greenfield expressways in India, the project is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities from around 10–12 hours to nearly six to seven hours, improving passenger mobility and freight movement.
The six-lane expressway, expandable to eight lanes, passes through 12 districts and is designed to strengthen logistics efficiency, reduce transportation costs and improve regional accessibility. It is also integrated with other major expressways, creating a robust road network across Uttar Pradesh. The corridor is expected to boost industrial development, support agricultural supply chains and attract investments along its route. Additionally, the project includes modern infrastructure features such as emergency landing strips, service areas and advanced safety systems, enhancing operational efficiency. The expressway is poised to act as a key economic corridor, generating employment opportunities and facilitating the development of industrial clusters and logistics hubs. It will also improve connectivity to major religious and tourism centres, further supporting regional growth. Overall, the project reflects the government’s continued focus on large-scale infrastructure development as a driver of economic expansion, improved connectivity and balanced regional development.
