Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Safran Aircraft Engine Services India (SAESI) facility in Hyderabad, located within the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The facility will serve as Safran’s dedicated maintenance, repair, and overhaul centre for LEAP engines used in Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, marking the first instance of a global aircraft engine original equipment manufacturer establishing such an advanced operation in India. Spread across 45,000 square metres, the unit has been set up with an initial investment of Rs. 1,300 crore (US$ 145 million). It is among the largest engine maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) facilities globally. Once fully operational by 2035, it is expected to service up to 300 LEAP engines annually and employ over 1,000 highly skilled Indian engineers and technicians, supported by state-of-the-art tooling and precision maintenance systems.

The facility is positioned as a key enabler in strengthening India’s domestic aviation ecosystem by reducing dependence on overseas MRO services, saving foreign exchange, and creating high-value technical employment. Enhanced local capabilities will contribute to a more resilient supply chain and improve turnaround times for aircraft operators. The development aligns with broader efforts to position India as a global hub for aviation services, supported by policy measures such as the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016, MRO Guidelines 2021, and Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms introduced in 2024, which have streamlined approvals, rationalised taxation, and reduced operational costs for MRO providers.
