Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sonamarg Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, acknowledging the dedication of labourers who risked their lives for the project. He praised their resolve to overcome challenges and complete the work. He expressed condolences for the loss of seven labourers during the process. In his address, he reminisced about his past visits to the region and praised the warmth of the people despite the harsh weather. He also highlighted the occasion's significance, noting that the inauguration coincided with major festivals like Lohri, Makar Sankranti, and Mahakumbh, extending his best wishes to all celebrating.
He emphasised that the Sonamarg Tunnel would ease travel by reducing difficulties caused by avalanches and snow, ensuring better access to vital services and supplies. He noted that the tunnel, part of a larger regional infrastructure push, would help improve connectivity to areas like Sonamarg, Kargil, and Leh, boosting tourism and local economies. He also announced plans for more infrastructure development in Jammu & Kashmir, including road, rail, and hospital connectivity projects. He also spoke about the significant investments in education, healthcare, and the local economy, with initiatives such as the PM Vishwakarma scheme and investments worth Rs. 13,000 crore (US$ 1.50 billion). He highlighted the region's transformation and reiterated his commitment to supporting the people of Jammu & Kashmir in their development journey.
