The 9th International Yoga Day celebrations at the United Nations headquarters in New York, led by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, established a new Guinness World Record for the active participation of the public of most nationalities.
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, led the celebrations and addressed a crowd of over 135 nationalities. He said, “I'm delighted to see you all. And I thank you all for coming. Friends. I'm told that almost every nationality is represented here today".
The Guinness World Records official adjudicator Mr. Michael Empric said "Today there was a Guinness World Records title attempt for most nationalities in a Yoga lesson. The mark was 140 nationalities. Today in New York, at the UN, they have 135. It is a new Guinness World Records title".
Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi also stated that "Yoga is adaptable to your age, gender, and fitness level. Yoga is portable and is truly universal. Yoga is free from copyright, from patents, and from royalty payments".
Many famous and well-known people attended the ceremonies, including Hollywood actor Mr. Richard Gere, UN General Assembly President Mr. Csaba Korisi, New York City Mayor and UN Deputy Secretary General Ms. Amina Mohammed.
PM Modi is making his sixth visit to the US, although this is his first official visit. He arrived in the United States on June 20th.2023. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will meet with US officials, members of Congress, American CEOs, and members of the Indian American community.
In India, a Yoga Day event held in Surat, Gujarat, broke the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering for a yoga session at one location, with 1.53 lakh people participating, according to officials. The Guinness World Records staff confirmed that 153,000 individuals attended the Yoga session in Surat. In 2018, Rajasthan's Kota set a new record when 100,984 individuals attended a Yoga Day session in one location.
