Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi participates in 26th SCO Summit in Bishkek

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi participated in the 26th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Bishkek, calling for stronger cooperation on security, connectivity and development while urging member countries to take committed action against terrorism. The summit, held from 31st August to 1st September and coinciding with the SCO's 25th anniversary, saw Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi thank Kyrgyz President Mr. Sadyr Zhaparov for his hospitality and call for a roadmap for the organisation's next 25 years, built on its tradition of dialogue and cooperation under the three pillars of Security, Connectivity and Opportunity. On security, he reiterated that conflicts cannot be resolved through military means, described terrorism as a grave threat to humanity, called for dismantling the entire terror ecosystem and stressed there should be no double standards in fighting terrorism. He also highlighted the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan for regional security, alongside India's development and humanitarian assistance to the country.
On connectivity, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi said trusted connectivity initiatives were essential for shared progress, while reiterating that such initiatives must respect sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also highlighted opportunities in technology, entrepreneurship and innovation, and announced India would host the first SCO Civilisation Dialogue Forum later this year. The summit adopted the Bishkek Declaration, along with four Memoranda of Understanding and more than 20 decisions and statements covering climate, nuclear safety, energy conservation and combating drug addiction, with India leading initiatives including English as an official SCO language, the Civilisation Dialogue Forum, the Young Scientist Forum and the Young Author's Conclave. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi thanked President Mr. Sadyr Zhaparov for hosting the summit and reaffirmed India's commitment to the SCO.
