Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, on May 15, 2025, chaired a meeting to review the progress and plans of the Fisheries sector. The plans are to advance the Fisheries sector while focusing on deep-sea fishing and seafood exports. India’s fisheries sector is vital in bolstering rural livelihoods and contributing to the national economy. With a coastline stretching over a vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of 2.02 million sq. km, the country holds immense marine potential, estimated at 5.31 million tonnes. Coastal states and Union Territories, home to around 3,477 fishing villages, contribute 72% of India’s total fish production and account for 76% of its seafood exports.
The Ministry has launched several initiatives to promote sustainability and strengthen marine fisheries, including the Marine Fisheries Census Operations, the Turtle Excluder Device (TED) project, and the Standard Operating Procedure for the Vessel Communication and Support System. Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet approved the establishment of another semiconductor unit under the India Semiconductor Mission. Commenting on the development, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi said the decision to set up the unit in Uttar Pradesh would accelerate growth and innovation while creating numerous job opportunities for the youth.
