Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi held wide-ranging discussions with Switzerland President Mr. Guy Parmelin in New Delhi to explore opportunities to strengthen India-Switzerland relations, with a focus on trade, investment, mobility and critical technologies. The Swiss President began his three-day visit to India on October 5, 2026, marking his first state visit to the country and second visit this year after participating in the India AI Impact Summit in February. Prior to the talks, he received a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan and paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar also met the Swiss President and discussed bilateral relations, including opportunities arising from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA).
The India-EFTA TEPA was signed in March 2024 after nearly 16 years of negotiations and came into effect in October 2025. Under the agreement, EFTA members, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, have committed to an investment target of Rs. 9.50 lakh crore (US$ 100 billion) in India over 15 years. The agreement is expected to strengthen trade and economic ties between India and Switzerland. More than 330 Swiss companies currently operate in India across sectors including engineering, services, precision instruments, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Indian companies have also established a presence in Switzerland in sectors such as information technology, pharmaceuticals and machinery. During the visit, discussions are also scheduled with President Smt. Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in honour of the Swiss President.
