The Indian Railways registered a 71% jump in revenue from the passenger segment between April and December 2022. As per the statement released by the Ministry of Railways, the total approximate earnings in the passenger segment for Indian Railways on originating basis during April-December 2022 amounted to Rs. 48,913 crores (US$ 5.91 million), in comparison to Rs. 28,569 crores (US$ 3.45 million) achieved during the same period last year.
In the reserved passenger segment, the total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 1st April to 31st December 2022 is 59.61 crores as compared to 56.05 crores during the same period last year, thereby showing an increase of 6% and the revenue generated during 1st April to 31st December 2022 amounted to US$ 4.65 million (Rs. 38,483 crores) as compared to US$ 3.19 million (Rs. 26,400 crores) during the same period last year, registering a growth of 46%.
In addition, in the unreserved passenger segment, the total approximate number of passengers booked during the period 1st April to 31st December 2022 is 40,197 lakhs as compared to 16,968 lakhs during the same period last year, amounting to an increase of 137%. The revenue generated from the unreserved passenger segment during the period 1st April to 31st December 2022 is US$ 1.26 million (Rs 10,430 crores) as compared to US$ 0.2 million (Rs 2,169 crores) during the same period last year, showing an increase of 381%.
