Record 81.8 mn ITRs filed till December 31, rises 9% in the current assessment year

As of December 31, a record-breaking 81.8 million income tax returns (ITRs) were filed for the assessment year 2023-24, reflecting a 9% increase from the 75.1 million filings in 2022-23. The income tax website reported 79.9 million verified and 77.7 million processed returns during this timeframe. The revenue authorities have been addressing concerns about the relatively low number of ITRs filed by assesses, with figures ranging from 58.7 million in the assessment year 2018-19 to a peak of 67.5 million in 2021-22 after a dip during the Covid-affected 2020-21.
