In FY25, India's mining sector achieved record production levels for key minerals and non-ferrous metals. Iron ore, which accounts for 70% of the total MCDR mineral production by value, reached 289 million metric tons (MMT), a 4.3% increase from the previous record of 277 MMT in FY24. Manganese ore production surpassed the FY24 record, growing by 11.8% to 3.8 MMT. Bauxite production rose by 2.9% to 24.7 MMT, and lead concentrate production increased by 3.1% to 393 thousand tonnes. Primary aluminium production broke records in the non-ferrous metal sector, increasing from 41.6 lakh tonnes in FY24 to 42 lakh tonnes in FY25. Refined copper production saw robust growth of 12.6%, rising from 5.09 lakh tonnes to 5.73 lakh tonnes.
India is the second-largest aluminium producer globally, among the top-10 producers in refined copper, and the fourth-largest iron ore producer. The continued growth in iron ore production reflects robust demand in the steel industry. Coupled with increases in aluminium and copper production, these trends indicate strong economic activity in user sectors such as energy, infrastructure, construction, automotive, and machinery.
