Recyclers in India have collected over 2,570 metric tonnes of lithium-ion waste batteries from electric vehicles (EVs) since 2022, as per Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mr. Kirti Vardhan Singh. The data was presented in Parliament, highlighting the country's progress in managing EV battery waste. The government introduced the Battery Waste Management Rules (August 2022) to ensure the safe disposal and recycling of used batteries, aiming to prevent environmental contamination. Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries poses risks of soil and water contamination, necessitating stringent regulations and industry compliance.
Between 2021 and 2023, India generated nearly five million metric tonnes of electronic waste, underscoring the importance of efficient waste management systems. The new regulatory framework mandates producers, importers, and recyclers to adhere to specific disposal and recycling processes, ensuring sustainable waste management. These initiatives align with the country's broader push towards environmental sustainability and the circular economy, reinforcing India's commitment to responsible battery waste disposal and reducing environmental hazards.
