Renault India joins hands with IIT Kanpur for vehicle R&D

Renault India has entered a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to strengthen its vehicle research and development capabilities in India, reinforcing the country's growing role as a global automotive engineering and innovation hub. Under the collaboration, Renault India will leverage IIT Kanpur's National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) to undertake advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing for its passenger vehicles. The partnership combines Renault's global engineering expertise with IIT Kanpur's world-class research infrastructure, enabling the development of future-ready vehicles tailored to evolving customer and regulatory requirements. By integrating advanced testing capabilities within India, the collaboration is expected to accelerate product development while enhancing vehicle performance, efficiency and refinement.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a comprehensive framework covering commercial engagement, intellectual property management and confidentiality, ensuring a transparent and mutually beneficial partnership between the two organisations. Renault Group India stated that the collaboration represents an important step in strengthening its engineering capabilities in the country and reflects its long-term commitment to innovation-led product development. IIT Kanpur highlighted that the partnership expands the application of its National Wind Tunnel Facility beyond aerospace, demonstrating the versatility of the infrastructure in supporting automotive research. The initiative is expected to foster industry-academia collaboration, promote knowledge exchange and strengthen India's automotive R&D ecosystem by enabling the adoption of advanced testing technologies. It also underscores the increasing role of premier academic institutions in supporting the automotive industry's transition towards high-performance, technologically advanced and future-ready mobility solutions.
