The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways plans to build 12,000 to 13,000 kilometers of national highways in the fiscal year 2023-24, making it the second-highest construction in the country's history. The previous highest was 13,327 km in 2020-21, and the second highest was 10,855 km in 2018-19. As of January 2024, 7,685 km of highways have already been completed, and the ministry aims to achieve a target of 13,814 km for the fiscal year.

The secretary of road transport and highways, Mr. Anurag Jain, expressed optimism about completing 4,500 to 5,000 km in the remaining two months, which would make it the second-best achievement in highway construction. This fiscal year will witness the construction of the highest-ever four-lane roads and access-controlled highways, reaching a record 9,500 km for the ministry.
