The PLI Scheme for the Food Processing Industry (PLISFPI) has produced impressive results, as there has been a growth of 10.58% in the sales of PLI items, while exports have grown by 7.41%, reports the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI). The total investments under the scheme have already surpassed the mark of Rs. 9,000 crore (US$ 0.97 billion), compared to the total commitments of about Rs. 7,000 crore (US$ 0.76 billion) made earlier, showing great confidence on the part of the industry and rapid investment decisions. The scheme has significantly helped to improve India’s food processing environment, as it has contributed towards branding, marketing, and export push for the Indian food sector.

The initiative has also provided an additional capacity of 34 lakh metric tonnes per annum in processing and preserving, along with employment opportunities to over 3 lakh people. Another important area of growth that has come about has been millets, as there has been a steep increase in their sales from Rs. 345 crore (US$ 0.04 billion) in 2022-23 to Rs. 1,845 crore (US$ 0.20 billion) in 2024-25, which highlights the impact that value addition in terms of nutrition, as well as branding in international markets, can have on the success of agricultural initiatives. Launched in FY22, the PLISFPI has been making improvements to production, as well as providing better food processing infrastructure and supporting Indian brands in overseas markets.
