SEMICON India 2026: India's Semiconductor Push Moves from Ambition to Ecosystem

Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi, Dwarka, on 17th September, themed "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," as India expands its semiconductor capabilities beyond chip design and manufacturing to packaging, testing, equipment, materials and talent. India's electronics production rose from around Rs. 1.9 lakh crore (US$ 31.06 billion) in 2014-15 to Rs. 13.11 lakh crore (US$ 148.35 billion) in 2025-26, while electronics exports rose from Rs. 38,000 crore (US$ 6.21 billion) to Rs. 4.24 lakh crore (US$ 47.98 billion) over the same period. Mobile phone production grew from Rs. 18,000 crore (US$ 2.94 billion) to Rs. 6.27 lakh crore (US$ 70.94 billion), with India now manufacturing 99.2% of domestic mobile phones and having become a net exporter, supporting around 2.5 million jobs.
The government launched the Semicon India programme in 2021 with an outlay of Rs. 76,000 crore (US$ 10.21 billion), followed by Semicon India Programme 2.0 in July 2026 with an outlay of Rs. 1,27,500 crore (US$ 134.25 billion), focused on chip design, equipment, fabrication, packaging, R&D and talent development. Twelve semiconductor projects have been approved across six states, involving investment commitments of more than Rs. 1.64 lakh crore (US$ 172.68 billion), with three facilities already in commercial production. India has also joined the Pax Silica coalition to strengthen global silicon supply chains, with SEMICON India 2026 set to feature over 600 exhibitors, including 300 international companies, and more than 150 speakers.
