Semiconductor manufacturing attracts interest from global companies as good number of applications received under the programme: Ashwini Vaishnaw

In December 2021, the government approved the Semicon India Program (Program for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India) with an outlay of Rs. 760 billion (US$ 10 billion) for the development of a sustainable semiconductor and display manufacturing ecosystem in India, according to Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Communications and Railways. Several state governments, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, are in talks with semiconductor corporations to establish manufacturing plants/fab complexes.

Semiconductor Fabs, Display Fabs, Compound Semiconductors / Silicon Photonics / Sensors (including MEMS) Fabs, Semiconductor Packaging (ATMP / OSAT) and Semiconductor Design are all part of the Semicon India Program. The government has also approved the conversion of Mohali's Semiconductor Laboratory into a brownfield Fab.

India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is an independent business division of Digital India Corporation with administrative and financial autonomy to formulate and drive India's long-term strategies for developing semiconductor and display manufacturing facilities, as well as the semiconductor design ecosystem. ISM will serve as the nodal agency for effective, coherent, and easy implementation of the schemes, and will be led by worldwide professionals in the Semiconductor and Display industry.
