Sensex breaches 49,000-mark, IT and auto stocks top gainers

On Monday, benefitting from the strong global indicators and optimism over corporate earnings domestically, equity benchmark indices ended at fresh record closing highs.

The BSE S&P Sensex was up by 487 points or 1% at the closing bell at 49,269, while the Nifty 50 was up by 138 points or 0.98% to 14,485.

Sector indices at the National Stock Exchange were mixed with a 3.3% increase in Nifty IT, 2.6% in automobiles, 1.2% in FMCG and 0.6% in real estate.

Tata Motors made a remarkable increase of 12.6% among the stocks to Rs. 223.20 (US$ 3.04) per share. Bajaj Auto gained 2.7% and Maruti Suzuki gained 2.6%.

With Infosys progressing by 4.8% to Rs. 1,375.95 (US$ 18.74) per share, IT majors also had a strong day, though HCL Technologies gained by 5.9% to Rs. 1,053.25 (US$ 14.34), Wipro by 3.9% to Rs. 447.05 (US$ 6.09) and Tech Mahindra by 2.4% to Rs. 1,076.80 (US$ 14.66). The other advanced ones were home loan lender HDFC, energy giant GAIL and pharma major Cipla.
