Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, stated that from January 2016 to June 2018, 100 Smart Cities were chosen following four rounds of competition. According to the SCM Guidelines, the Central Government would offer financial assistance worth Rs. 48,000 crore (US$ 6.42 billion) over five years, or Rs. 100 crore (US$ 13.38 million) per city every year. The State Government/Urban Local Body (ULB) will donate an equivalent amount on a matching basis.
This project has seen a lot of progress as these Smart Cities have bid out 6,721 projects for Rs. 1,88,507 crore (US$ 25.23 billion) issued work orders in 6,124 projects totaling Rs. 1,62,908 crore (US$ 21.80 billion) and completed 3,421 projects worth Rs. 58,735 crore (US$ 7.86 billion). Government of India has released Rs. 28,413.60 crore (US$ 3.80 billion) for 100 Smart Cities as of 21 January 2022, of which Rs. 23,668.27 crore (US$ 3.16 billion) (83%) has been used.
