State-owned South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL) would invest US$ 20.5 million (Rs. 168 crore) to plant 26 lakh saplings in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh as part of its green initiatives, according to an official statement.
To carry out the plantation work, the miner recently signed two separate agreements with Chhattisgarh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (CGRVVN) and Madhya Pradesh Rajya Van Vikas Nigam (MPRVVN), the coal ministry said.
The plantation will take place over five years, from 2023-24 to 2027-28, with a maintenance term of four years after each consecutive plantation year. SECL will spend US$ 16 million (Rs. 131.52 crore) in Chhattisgarh and US$ 4.6 million (Rs. 38.11 crore) in Madhya Pradesh for plantation works, it said.
According to the agreements, under the guidance and supervision of experts, the relevant municipal bodies of the states will begin the plantation works on the company's acquired, leased, purchased, or transferred land. Various fruit-bearing trees, timber-valued trees, and medicinal/herbal plants including Neem, Amla, Karanj, etc. will be planted as part of the plantation activity.
SECL is conducting significant plantations in and around its mining regions in an effort to boost the green cover and conserve and promote biodiversity. The company planted more than 8 lakh seedlings across 365 hectares in the financial year 2022-23, which was the highest plantation in its history, according to the ministry.
