Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo system successfully flight-tested by DRDO off the Odisha coast

On May 01, 2024, the Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system underwent a successful flight test from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), SMART aims to strengthen the Indian Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities beyond the traditional range of lightweight torpedoes.

This advanced missile-based torpedo delivery system, housed in a canister, features cutting-edge components like a two-stage solid propulsion system and a precision inertial navigation system. Launched from a ground mobile launcher, the system demonstrated state-of-the-art mechanisms including symmetric separation, ejection, and velocity control. Defence Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh praised the successful test, pointing out its potential to bolster the Indian Navy's capabilities. Dr. Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, commended the collaborative efforts of the SMART team and urged them to maintain their pursuit of excellence.
