On October 1st, Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 [SBMU 2.0] and AMRUT 2.0 were launched, whose primary focus is to make cities garbage-free and clean, and to provide them with water security over the mission period of 5 years (2021-2026).
The highlights of SBMU 2.0 are as follows:
1. All households and premises should segregate their waste into wet waste (kitchens, gardens) and dry waste (paper, plastic, glass, and domestic hazardous and sanitary waste wrapped separately).
2. Total door-to-door collection of segregated waste should be done from each house/premise.
3. Proper scientific management of all fractions and kinds of waste, including safe disposal in scientific landfills.
4. Old dumpsters should be fixed and renewed.
5. In cities with less than 1,00,000 people, all used water - including faecal sludge - should be safely contained, transported, processed, and disposed so that no untreated water or faecal sludge ends up polluting the ground and water bodies.
6. The usage of single-use plastic needs to be gradually reduced.
The highlights of AMRUT 2.0 are as follows:
1. There should be universal water supply coverage from 500 cities to about 4,800 statutory towns.
2. There will be a focus on making cities self-reliant and water secure.
3. There should be universal coverage of sewage and septage management in 500 AMRUT cities.
4. There is a target to provide 2.68 crore drinking water tap connections and 2.64 crore sewer connections.
5. There is a focus on the financial sustainability of Urban Local Bodies (ULB’s), which can be achieved through enhanced credit worthiness and market borrowing.
6. The saying of ‘Pey Jal Survekshan’ will be promoted in cities to increase healthy competition, and to function as a monitoring tool and mission accelerator.
7. A technology sub-mission under AMRUT 2.0 will help identify proven and potential global technologies in the water sector.
8. Start-ups involved in low-cost, indigenous solutions, equipment, and processes will be supported and encouraged.
All the cities of Uttar Pradesh, including Firozabad, are covered under SBMU 2.0 and have access to all the necessary components as per the operational guidelines.
4,371 ULB’s out of 4,372 ULB’s (including Firozabad) in India have been declared open defecation free (ODF) under SBMU 2.0 and AMRUT 2.0, except for Puralia city in West Bengal.
