To investigate the development of a low-carbon steel manufacturing process, Tata Steel has teamed up with the German SMS business. According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), both businesses will conduct additional technical conversations and take steps to produce a joint industrial demonstration of the electric-assisted syngas smelter (EASyMelt) technology created by the SMS group.

The experiment will be carried out at Tata Steel's Jamshedpur plant's E Blast Furnace with the goal of cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 50% from baseline operation.

The electric-assisted syngas smelter (EASyMelt) technology is an iron-making solution that can be implemented in existing integrated steel plants to accelerate decarbonisation.

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director (CEO and MD), Mr. T.V. Narendran stated that they have been looking for solutions to facilitate the transition to green steel production, and thus contribute to a sustainable future. Additionally, given that India is the second-largest steel producer in the world, it is incumbent upon significant producers like Tata Steel to drive the nation's decarbonization process.

He further mentioned that Tata Steel plans to take this association ahead with a deeper collaboration to access better technologies and processes to reduce the carbon footprint in a meaningful way.

Tata Steel is prioritising decarbonisation and has set a goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045.
