The number of telephone subscribers in India increased by 2.92 million to 1,170.73 million at the end of May 2022, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India.
The number of subscribers climbed in urban areas by 0.8% to 647.81 million, while it increased in rural regions by 2.1% to 522.92 million.
The market share of wireless subscribers held by the private telecom service providers as of May 31, 2022, was 89.87%, while that of the two PSU service providers, BSNL and MTNL, was only 10.13%. While Reliance Jio added almost 3.1 million wireless subscribers throughout the month, Bharti Airtel added 1.02 million. Vodafone Idea, on the other hand, lost 759,258 customers.
Notably, every service area in May had an increase in wireless subscribers, with the exception of Assam, West Bengal, Kolkata, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana.
7.97 million users made Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests throughout the month of May.
